This Country Brief is an operational decision-support publication, not legal advice. Regulations, fees, office hours, port availability, online systems, and local practices can change with little notice. Captains should verify current requirements with the relevant government authorities, port authorities, marinas, and qualified yacht agents before departure and again before arrival.
SUMMARY

Executive Summary

Bermuda is a mid-Atlantic landfall with a comparatively formal but well-established yacht clearance process. The operational center for foreign private yachts is St. George’s: visiting vessels normally contact Bermuda Radio offshore, proceed under direction to St. George’s Harbour, keep the yellow Q flag flying, and complete Immigration, Customs, and Health clearance through HM Customs at the Yacht Reporting Centre on Ordnance Island.

The main agencies affecting a cruising captain are HM Customs, the Department of Immigration, the Ministry of Health / Port Health process, the Department of Marine & Ports Services, Bermuda Radio, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Department of Customs for controlled goods and declarations. Bermuda’s process is generally manageable for well-prepared captains, but it is less forgiving of undocumented pets, undeclared restricted goods, firearms, drugs, or attempts to leave the vessel before clearance.

NAVOPLAN operational interpretation: Treat Bermuda as a single-entry-control jurisdiction for visiting yachts. St. George’s is the default clearance point; Hamilton Princess is a limited satellite option for prearranged marina arrivals. Contact Bermuda Radio at 30 miles, follow instructions exactly, and do not assume a marina berth, anchorage, or domestic movement is authorized until clearance and any needed permit are complete.
Priority Recommendation Operational Reason Primary Source
1 Call Bermuda Radio on VHF 16 or 27 when approximately 30 miles from land. Bermuda Radio provides approach information and directs the vessel to clearance berthing. Bermuda Captain Handbook
2 Plan St. George’s as the default port of entry and exit. The main permanent Yacht Reporting Centre is at St. George’s / Ordnance Island. Go To Bermuda sailing guidance
3 Complete Bermuda Arrival Cards for all visitors arriving by yacht. The Arrival Card replaced pandemic travel authorizations and is free through the official site. Bermuda Arrival Card
4 Verify visa-controlled nationality rules before crew joins by air or arrives by yacht. Some nationalities require a valid multiple re-entry visa for the UK, US, or Canada. Bermuda entry visas
5 Do not bring undocumented pets, prohibited weapons, cannabis, spear guns, or undeclared plant/animal products. Bermuda has strict import controls and no quarantine facility for failed animal inspections. Prohibited and restricted goods

Country Overview

Bermuda is an isolated, reef-fringed British Overseas Territory with a concentrated yacht clearance system. Operationally, the country is not difficult if the captain follows the arrival protocol, but the approach, night-arrival quarantine procedure, and strict import controls require discipline.

Operational Area National Requirement Local Practice / Captain Impact Verification Source
Initial contact Visiting yachts are required to contact Bermuda Radio on approach. Call at about 30 miles from land on VHF 16 or 27 and expect to provide vessel details for safety and clearance coordination. Bermuda Captain Handbook
Entry clearance Private yachts must obtain Immigration, Customs, and Health clearance from HM Customs. St. George’s / Ordnance Island is the normal reporting point; do not send crew ashore before clearance. Sailing to Bermuda
Arrival Card Visitors arriving by yacht should complete the Bermuda Arrival Card. Use the official free site and keep the confirmation available for presentation. Official Bermuda Arrival Card
Permits Transit and cruising permits apply to visiting pleasure craft and superyachts. Transit permit is for short visits up to five days; cruising permit is for longer stays up to six months. Verify current fee and process before departure. Bermuda Guidance Document V3
Customs controls Customs enforces import/export restrictions and processes declarations at ports of entry. Declare goods, pets, plants, food, controlled items, and cash over the threshold. Assume inspection is possible. Bermuda Customs
Typical timeline: A clean arrival in daylight with documents ready may be cleared with limited formality. Night arrivals between 0000 and 0800 are normally directed to the sterile Powder Hole anchorage until morning clearance.

Before You Leave Home

A Bermuda arrival is straightforward when the captain has prepared crew, vessel, permit, customs, health, and restricted-item information before departure. The most common operational failure is assuming that a mid-Atlantic landfall can be handled casually on arrival.

Preparation Item Captain Action Operational Notes Source / Verification
Pre-arrival research Confirm St. George’s clearance procedure, Bermuda Radio contact, and current fees. Recheck shortly before departure because race seasons, weather, and temporary arrangements can affect clearance flow. Go To Bermuda sailing guidance
Advance notification Register and prepare arrival information through SailClear when applicable. Bermuda yachting guidance references SailClear for Customs pre-arrival information. Verify current use before departure. SailClear
Online visitor form Complete a Bermuda Arrival Card for each visitor. Use only the official free Arrival Card site; do not pay third parties. Bermuda Arrival Card
Maritime health Complete the maritime declaration of health as required. Published yachting guidance says the maritime declaration of health can be completed up to two days before arrival. Sailing to Bermuda
Cruising or transit permit Decide whether the stay is transit or cruising. Transit is for up to five days; cruising permit supports longer stays up to six months. Verify current fee and process. Guidance Document V3
Immigration requirements Check passports, MRV requirements, and crew-arriving-by-air procedures. Visa-controlled nationals may need a UK, US, or Canadian multiple re-entry visa valid beyond the stay. Bermuda entry visas
Vessel documentation Prepare registration/documentation, insurance, crew list, previous clearance, and vessel particulars. Carry originals and digital copies. The captain should be able to produce vessel length in metres for permit calculation. Verify with Customs / Marine & Ports
Insurance Carry proof of health insurance for crew and vessel liability insurance. Extended-stay yacht guidance references proof of health insurance and financial means for repatriation. Private vessel entry guidance
Pets Obtain an import permit and veterinary documents before arrival. Do not depart with a pet until the import permit is approved. Animals without proper documents can be refused entry or returned. Importing animals into Bermuda
Firearms / weapons Do not carry firearms, ammunition, stun devices, prohibited knives, spear guns, or self-defence sprays without confirmed legal authority. Bermuda’s restricted and prohibited goods rules are strict. Spear guns are listed among offensive weapons. Prohibited and restricted goods
Medications Keep prescription medication in original labelled containers and carry prescriptions. Reasonable personal-use quantities of prescribed medication are generally permitted, but controlled-substance treatment medications require advice before travel. Prohibited and restricted goods
Drones Verify current rules before departure. Drone rules can change and may interact with airport, privacy, and protected-area restrictions. Verify with Civil Aviation / Government of Bermuda
Communications Confirm VHF operation, MMSI, offshore communications, and emergency contacts. Bermuda Radio is a key operational contact for arrival, weather, navigational warnings, and safety coordination. Bermuda Captain Handbook
Digital backups Store scans of passports, vessel documents, insurance, health certificates, pet permits, and crew letters. Offshore arrivals often occur after long passages when printers and internet may not be immediately available. NAVOPLAN operational interpretation
4

Arrival Procedures

The Bermuda arrival sequence is built around offshore notification, controlled approach, quarantine signaling, and clearance before shore contact. Follow Bermuda Radio instructions even if another yacht appears to be doing something different.

Serious arrival mistake: Do not allow crew or passengers to go ashore, visit another boat, receive guests, lower pets ashore, or stop at a marina before formal clearance. Night arrivals directed to Powder Hole remain quarantined until Customs has completed inquiries.
Step Captain Action Operational Meaning Proof / Source
1. Offshore contact Call Bermuda Radio on VHF 16 or 27 about 30 miles from land. Provide vessel details for search-and-rescue tracking and receive approach guidance. Captain Handbook
2. Follow approach instructions Proceed as directed toward St. George’s Harbour. Bermuda’s reef approaches demand compliance with routing and local instructions. Bermuda Radio instructions
3. Fly Q flag Enter with the yellow quarantine flag displayed conspicuously. The flag remains hoisted until Customs grants clearance. Captain Handbook
4. Daylight clearance Proceed to Customs clearance berthing at Ordnance Island when directed. The Customs boarding officer normally handles clearance formalities for Immigration, Customs, and Health. Private vessel entry guidance
5. Night arrival If arriving between 0000 and 0800, expect direction to anchor in Powder Hole. The vessel remains in a sterile quarantine anchorage until morning formalities. Captain Handbook
6. Present documents Provide passports, vessel documents, crew list, previous clearance, Arrival Card confirmations, health form, permits, declarations, and pet documents if applicable. Have originals, copies, and digital backups ready to avoid delays. Customs / Immigration / Health
7. Pay fees Pay passenger tax and permit fees as assessed. Obtain official receipts. Retain receipts aboard for departure and future audit questions. Private vessel entry guidance
8. Retain clearance proof Keep clearance documents, receipts, and permit paperwork accessible. These may be needed for domestic movement, marina check-in, departure, or next-country arrival. NAVOPLAN operational interpretation
5

Immigration

Bermuda immigration rules for yacht crews combine normal visitor entry, yacht-specific arrival procedures, and special considerations for crew who join or leave by air.

Issue Official Requirement / Guidance Operational Meaning for Captain Verification Source
Passport A valid, machine-readable passport is required for all crew and passengers by sea. Do not rely on driver’s licences or non-government identity documents for international yacht arrival. Sailing to Bermuda
Arrival Card Visitors arriving by private yacht must complete the Bermuda Arrival Card before or upon arrival. Each visitor should have a confirmation email/download available. Bermuda Arrival Card FAQ
Travel authorization Government guidance says travel authorizations are no longer required from 14 November 2022; the Arrival Card replaced that process. If older yachting pages mention a Mariner’s Travel Authorisation, verify with the current Government of Bermuda visitors page and Customs before departure. Government visitors page
Visa-controlled nationals Travelers whose nationality is listed in Bermuda’s order must present a multiple re-entry visa for the UK, US, or Canada. Check nationality-specific requirements early, especially for crew joining from third countries. Bermuda entry visas
MRV validity The MRV and passport must be valid for 45 days after expiration of the visitor stay or relevant work permit. A crew member can be refused entry if the passport or MRV validity window is short. Bermuda entry visas
Typical length of stay Visiting yachtsmen and crew have been granted a maximum three-month stay on arrival under published yacht guidance. The vessel permit period and the individual immigration stay are related but not always identical. Confirm stamp/permission for every person. Private vessel entry guidance
Extended stays Extended yacht stays may require proof of citizenship, financial means for repatriation, health insurance, and a declaration not to work. Prepare these documents before asking for longer stay permission. Private vessel entry guidance
Crew arriving by air Yacht guidance says crew arriving by air to depart by yacht may need a captain’s letter and coordination with Immigration. Provide each joining crew member a signed letter with vessel and crew details; verify current landing-permit practice before booking one-way air travel. Captain Handbook
Overstays Immigration permission must not be exceeded. Track each crew member’s permitted stay and vessel permit separately; apply before expiry if needed. Department of Immigration
Captain’s operating note: Bermuda’s location makes crew changes by air tempting, but one-way crew travel can create documentation questions. Prepare captain letters, onward passage evidence, passport scans, and insurance proof before the crew member boards the flight.
6

Customs & Temporary Importation

Bermuda Customs processes arriving yachts, collects revenue, enforces import restrictions, and controls declarations. For the vessel itself, published Customs guidance says no customs declaration is required for temporary imports of vessels, aircraft, and transport containers; however, people and goods aboard remain subject to declaration, inspection, duty, and restrictions.

Frequently misunderstood issue: A yacht’s temporary presence is not the same as a blanket exemption for goods aboard. Personal goods, pets, firearms, restricted foods, plants, business goods, shipped parts, cash over the declaration threshold, and controlled items must be handled under the appropriate Customs rules.
Customs Topic Operational Rule Captain Action Verification Source
Vessel temporary import No customs declaration is required for temporary imports of vessels. Still present vessel documents and obtain cruising/transit clearance as required. Declaring goods to Customs
Transit permit For pleasure craft and superyachts visiting for a period not exceeding five days. Appropriate for weather stop, ocean-passage rest, brief repairs, or short provisioning stop. Verify limitations. Guidance Document V3
Cruising permit For pleasure craft and superyachts for a period not exceeding six months for pleasure and putting passengers ashore. Use for a normal Bermuda cruising stay. It does not authorize charter services. Guidance Document V3
Charter permit Superyacht charter permits are a separate category with advance application through a local agent. Private cruisers should not carry paying passengers or provide charter services without formal authority. Guidance Document V3
Domestic movement Movement after clearance is subject to local port, anchoring, marine, and permit conditions. Consult Bermuda Radio, Marine & Ports, marina operators, and current notices before moving into restricted areas or under bridges. Captain Handbook
Repairs and spare parts Imported goods by post, courier, air cargo, or sea cargo require the appropriate declaration and may be subject to duty. Use a marina, agent, courier, or freight forwarder experienced with Bermuda Customs for critical parts. Declaring goods to Customs
Dutiable goods Visitors have a limited allowance for personal goods and alcohol/tobacco. Declare goods above allowances or uncertain items; do not assume “ship’s stores” are exempt. Duty free allowances
Cash reporting Cash and negotiable instruments above BDA $10,000 must be declared. Declare cash, bank notes, cheques, travellers cheques, promissory notes, and money orders over the threshold. Customs and Immigration overview
Dinghy and outboard Normally treated as ship’s equipment when part of the visiting vessel, but verify if sold, replaced, or landed. Do not sell or dispose of vessel equipment locally without Customs advice. Verify with Customs
Long-term storage / vessel sale Not a normal cruising-clearance issue. Engage Customs, Marine & Ports, Immigration, and a qualified agent before any local sale, long-term layup, or change of ownership. Verify before departure

Cruising Within the Country

Once cleared, Bermuda offers sheltered harbours and attractive short-distance cruising, but reef navigation, bridge clearances, protected marine areas, fishing rules, and harbour directions matter more than distance.

Domestic Movement

After entry, confirm whether the vessel’s permit and clearance allow the planned movement. Bermuda is compact, but official directions from Bermuda Radio, Marine & Ports, or the Harbour Master should be followed.

Anchoring

Use designated or locally accepted anchorages and comply with harbour directions. In port, the Harbour Master may direct where a ship anchors or moves. Do not anchor where it obstructs approaches, docks, channels, cable areas, moorings, or protected sites.

Marine Parks and Protected Areas

Protected species, reef areas, dive sites, no-net bays, and seasonal fisheries areas require care. Verify current Department of Environment and Natural Resources rules before fishing, spearfishing, lobster diving, collecting, or anchoring near sensitive areas.

Fishing

Recreational fishing is regulated. Protected species may not be taken, daily bag limits apply, fixed gear is prohibited, and commercial sale is limited to registered commercial fishermen. Verify rules before fishing from the yacht.

Spearfishing and Lobster

Spearfishing requires a licence issued only to Bermuda residents, only pole spears are permitted, spearguns and Hawaiian slings are banned, SCUBA may not be used, and spearfishing is not permitted within one nautical mile of any island. Lobster diving also requires a licence and has a closed season.

Diving

Use established dive moorings or local operators where appropriate. Do not damage reefs, collect marine life, or anchor on sensitive bottom. Verify protected dive-site restrictions.

Discharge Rules

Assume strict expectations for clean-water practices. Use pump-out facilities where available, avoid discharge in harbours and near reefs, and verify local discharge requirements before any extended stay.

Fuel, Water, and Marinas

Fuel and water are available through marina and local service providers, but availability, depths, approach restrictions, reservations, and service hours should be verified before movement.

VHF Practice

Keep a listening watch. Bermuda Radio is central for arrival, departure, weather information, navigational warnings, and safety broadcasts.

Weather Sources

Use Bermuda Radio, official Bermuda weather sources, offshore routing, and independent forecast products. The Bermuda approach can be safe in settled conditions and unforgiving in poor visibility, night arrival, or heavy weather.

Security

Bermuda is generally a controlled, service-oriented cruising destination, but captains should still lock the vessel, secure tenders, and comply with Customs and harbour requirements.

Bridge Clearances

Several bridges have low clearances or no through passage. Verify current bridge restrictions before planning internal routes, especially for mast height, antennas, arches, and tenders.

8

Fees & Costs

Bermuda fees are usually transparent when assessed during formal clearance, but they change and may differ by vessel size, permit type, event arrangement, agent use, marina stay, and imported goods.

Fee / Cost Published Amount / Status Operational Guidance Verification Source
Passenger tax / clearance fee Published private-yacht guidance lists US $35 per person collected by the Customs boarding officer. Carry cash/card options and obtain a government receipt. Verify current amount before departure. Private vessel entry guidance
Transit permit Published rate: US/BDA $5 per metre for short visits up to five days. Verify current rate and whether vessel length is measured LOA or registered length. Guidance Document V3
Cruising permit below 24 metres Published rate: US/BDA $6.50 per metre for pleasure craft below 24 metres. Appropriate for longer private cruising stays; verify current rate before departure. Sailing to Bermuda
Cruising permit 24 metres and above / superyacht Published rate: US/BDA $8.50 per metre. Large vessels should consider using an agent and confirming pilotage, anchoring, marina, and operating restrictions. Sailing to Bermuda
Charter permit Published rate: one-off US/BDA $8.50 per metre plus 6% of gross charter fee for each charter. Superyacht charter permit requires advance application through a local agent. Guidance Document V3
Immigration fees Possible landing-permit or crew-arrival fees for specific circumstances. Verify for crew arriving by air, one-way tickets, extensions, or unusual crew changes. Captain Handbook
Overtime / weekend fees Verify current fee. May apply if clearance is requested outside normal arrangements or during special events; ask before arrival. Verify with Customs / agent
Agent fees Varies by service and vessel size. Request a written fee schedule and distinguish official government fees from agent service fees. Verify with agent
Marina fees Varies by marina, LOA, beam, power, season, and reservation. Book early; verify depth, electrical service, pump-out, water, fuel, and clearance limitations. Verify with marina
Fishing / spearfishing permits Spearfishing licence fee published at US/BDA $130, but licences are issued only to Bermuda residents. Foreign yacht visitors should not assume they can obtain a spearfishing licence. Spearfishing licence application
Pet import Fees vary; animals may be subject to Customs duty or refundable deposit depending on status. Obtain permit before departure and verify Customs treatment for visiting animals. Importing animals into Bermuda
Imported goods / spare parts Duty, wharfage, processing, courier, and clearing fees may apply. Use an experienced receiving agent for critical parts and keep invoices. Declaring goods to Customs
9

Controlled & Restricted Items

Bermuda’s prohibited and restricted goods rules deserve careful pre-departure review. The safe operating assumption is simple: do not bring weapons, illegal drugs, undeclared animals, plant material, fresh produce, or uncertain restricted items without written authority.

Item Status / Risk Operational Guidance Verification Source
Firearms Restricted; licence/permit required. Do not carry firearms aboard for Bermuda landfall unless arrangements are formally approved in advance. Prohibited and restricted goods
Ammunition / explosives Restricted. Ammunition creates Customs and police issues even if the firearm is not aboard. Verify before departure. Prohibited and restricted goods
Knives / offensive weapons Several weapon categories are prohibited, including flick knives, gravity knives, butterfly knives, push daggers, swordsticks, throwing stars, spring-loaded batons, and similar items. Remove tactical or prohibited knives and self-defence devices before departure. Prohibited and restricted goods
Spear guns Listed among offensive weapons in Customs guidance; spearfishing rules also ban spearguns and Hawaiian slings. Do not arrive with a spear gun unless you have clear written permission; pole spear rules still require a resident-issued licence. Customs restricted goods and Spearfishing licence
Drones Verify current aviation and operating restrictions. Keep drone stowed until rules are confirmed; avoid airports, people, official sites, and protected areas. Verify with Bermuda Civil Aviation / local authorities
Prescription medications Generally permitted in reasonable personal-use quantity if prescribed and labelled. Carry original containers and prescriptions; contact health authorities before bringing methadone or similar treatment medications. Prohibited and restricted goods
Illegal drugs / cannabis Prohibited. Do not carry cannabis or illegal drugs aboard, even if legal in departure jurisdiction. Prohibited and restricted goods
Alcohol and tobacco Duty-free allowances apply. Declare amounts above allowances; keep ship’s stores inventory ready. Duty free allowances
Food, meat, plants, produce Many plant and animal products are restricted or require inspection/permit. Declare all fresh produce, meats, plants, seeds, wood, and plant products. Expect inspection or confiscation of some items. Prohibited and restricted goods
Pets Import permit and health documents required before arrival. No permit, no safe entry. Do not risk immediate return or refusal. Importing animals into Bermuda
Cash Declaration required above BDA $10,000 in cash or negotiable instruments. Declare early and keep receipts/records. Customs and Immigration overview
VHF / radio transmitters Certain radio transmitters, including CB and VHF radios, may require valid permit under Customs restricted-goods guidance. Carry vessel radio licence documentation and be ready to show registration/MMSI details. Prohibited and restricted goods
10

Pets

Bermuda pet entry is strict. All animals arriving in Bermuda must have an import permit issued in advance and an original veterinary health document. Animals arriving without proper documentation can be returned to the point of origin.

Pet risk: Bermuda has no quarantine facility for failed animal inspections. Do not depart for Bermuda with a pet until the import permit, veterinary certificate, microchip, treatment, and all required statements are complete and accepted.

Yacht Agents & Clearance Services

Many private cruising yachts can clear Bermuda without an agent if they follow the standard St. George’s procedure. Agents become more useful for superyachts, charter activity, parts importation, crew changes, complex visas, marina coordination, after-hours issues, or non-standard operations.

Situation Agent Useful? Why What to Ask
Standard private yacht arrival at St. George’s Optional Clearance is designed for direct yacht arrival through HM Customs. Ask whether official fees differ with/without agent and whether the agent adds value.
Transit stop under five days Usually optional Process is generally simple if documents and fees are ready. Ask if any post-weather or after-hours issue suggests agent assistance.
Cruising stay beyond a few days Possibly useful Marina, permit, bridge, anchoring, and local-service planning may be smoother. Ask for written government-fee estimate and service-fee estimate separately.
Superyacht or vessel over 24 metres Often useful Permit fees, berths, pilotage, operating plans, and local coordination become more complex. Ask for clearance plan, berth plan, pilotage guidance, and emergency contacts.
Charter activity Required / effectively necessary Published guidance says charter permit applications are advance application only through a local agent. Ask about charter permit, gross charter fee calculation, passenger limits, tax, and liquor licence if relevant.
Pets Useful if timing is tight Pet documents must be correct before arrival; no quarantine fallback exists. Ask who verifies permit approval and how Customs inspection will be handled.
Parts importation Useful Courier, duty, wharfage, Customs declaration, and receiving address problems can delay repairs. Ask for total landed-cost estimate and clearance timeline.
Crew arriving by air Useful for complex cases One-way travel, MRV requirements, and crew letters can raise Immigration issues. Ask what letters and documentation Immigration expects before the crew member flies.
Agent caution: Ask the agent to identify which steps are required by law, which are marina or local practice, and which are convenience services. Keep copies of all official receipts.
12

Departure Procedures

Outbound clearance from Bermuda should be treated as a formal step. The captain should verify the exact checkout location, timing, fees, crew list, and next-port requirements before departure day.

Step Captain Action Operational Meaning Verify With
1. Confirm departure requirement Ask Customs / Yacht Reporting Centre what outbound clearance is required for the next country. Do not assume inbound clearance documents are sufficient for the next port. HM Customs / YRC
2. Confirm location Plan to clear out at St. George’s unless prearranged otherwise. Hamilton Princess or event-specific arrangements may not be available for ordinary departures. Bermuda Radio / Customs
3. Give notice Ask how much notice is needed and whether office hours or overtime apply. Weather-window departures can be disrupted if clearance is not scheduled. Customs / Agent
4. Verify crew list Ensure outbound crew matches immigration records and any joining/leaving crew has been documented. Crew changes create the most common departure mismatch. Immigration / Customs
5. Customs departure Declare any shipped parts, repairs, dutiable goods, or goods remaining in Bermuda. Resolve Customs issues before casting off. HM Customs
6. Immigration departure Confirm all crew/passengers are legally departing and no one is overstaying. The captain is responsible for crew movement by yacht or air. Immigration
7. Obtain clearance document Secure outbound clearance / clearance certificate / document required for next port. Next country may require proof of departure from Bermuda. Customs / YRC
8. Call Bermuda Radio Notify Bermuda Radio on departure for safety. Official yachting guidance requests a call to Bermuda Harbour Radio on departure. Captain Handbook
13

Reality Check

Reality Why It Surprises Captains Operational Response
Bermuda is small, but not casual. The island feels accessible, but clearance, import rules, and harbour control are formal. Prepare as if entering a controlled port, not a beach anchorage.
St. George’s is the default gateway. Captains see Hamilton and Dockyard marinas and assume multiple free-choice entry points. Plan St. George’s unless an alternate is confirmed in writing.
Night arrival does not mean immediate clearance. After a long passage, crews want rest or shore access. Expect sterile anchoring at Powder Hole if arriving between midnight and 0800.
Pets are unforgiving. Some countries allow inspection or quarantine fixes on arrival. Do not depart without approved import permit and correct veterinary documents.
Fishing rules are not informal cruiser rules. Bluewater captains may assume fishing from the boat is always acceptable. Verify species, gear, resident-only licensing, no-net bays, and protected areas first.
Currency feels simple, but costs can be high. Bermuda dollars and U.S. dollars are effectively equal locally, but services and marinas can be expensive. Budget conservatively and get written price quotes.
Old pandemic-era references still appear online. Some yacht pages may mention travel authorizations. Use current Government Arrival Card and visitors pages as the source of truth, then verify with Customs before departure.
14

Common Cruiser Mistakes

Mistake Why It Happens Consequences How to Avoid It
Not calling Bermuda Radio early enough. Captain waits until harbour entrance or assumes AIS is enough. Confusion, approach delays, or noncompliance with arrival expectations. Call at about 30 miles on VHF 16 or 27.
Going directly to a marina. Marina reservation creates false sense of clearance authorization. Customs and immigration violations. Clear first at St. George’s unless alternate YRC clearance is confirmed.
Letting crew ashore before clearance. Long passage fatigue and visible town access. Quarantine/Customs violation and potential penalties. Keep everyone aboard until formally cleared.
Arriving with undocumented pets. Captain assumes vet records are enough. Refusal, return to origin, expense, and distress. Obtain Bermuda import permit before departure.
Carrying prohibited weapons or spear guns. Cruising inventory not reviewed before departure. Seizure, prosecution risk, delayed clearance. Remove prohibited items or obtain written authority before departure.
Fishing without checking local rules. Assumption that offshore fishing habits transfer inside Bermuda waters. Fines, gear seizure, criminal exposure. Check Department of Environment and Natural Resources rules first.
Confusing vessel permit duration and immigration duration. Cruising permit may allow up to six months, but visitor permission may be different. Overstay risk for crew. Track both vessel permit and each person’s immigration permission.
Assuming old online references are current. Search results show older pandemic-era or event-specific guidance. Wrong forms or missed requirements. Use official Government pages and verify with Customs / Bermuda Radio.

Bermuda Radio is not just a formality. It is your bridge between offshore arrival, reef approach, clearance berth, quarantine anchorage, and local safety information.

Prepare for a Tired Arrival

Many yachts arrive after an ocean passage. Put passports, crew list, Arrival Cards, health form, pet documents, vessel registration, insurance, and ship’s papers in one labelled folder before landfall.

Respect the Sterile Zone

If routed to Powder Hole overnight, treat it as quarantine, not anchoring freedom. No visitors, no dinghy runs, no contact, and no pet landing until cleared.

Clarify the Permit You Need

A short weather stop, a cruising visit, and charter activity are different operational categories. Know which one you are requesting before the Customs officer asks.

Do Not Import Problems

Firearms, prohibited knives, cannabis, spear guns, uncertified pets, plants, fresh produce, and shipped parts can make a simple arrival complicated. Clean the vessel inventory before departure.

Get Receipts

Retain official receipts for passenger fees, permits, marina charges, Customs payments, imported parts, and agent fees. They are useful for departure and for future questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I clear in at Hamilton?

Not as a default assumption. St. George’s is the main permanent Yacht Reporting Centre. Hamilton Princess has a limited satellite YRC for vessels prearranged to berth there. Verify before arrival.

When do I call Bermuda Radio?

Call on VHF 16 or 27 when approximately 30 miles from land and follow the approach and clearance instructions provided.

Do yacht visitors need the Bermuda Arrival Card?

Yes. Visitors arriving by private yacht should complete the free official Bermuda Arrival Card before or upon arrival.

Do I still need a travel authorization?

The current Government visitors page says travel authorizations were discontinued from 14 November 2022 and replaced by the Bermuda Arrival Card. Verify if any older yachting guidance appears to conflict.

How long can a private yacht stay?

Published permit guidance distinguishes transit visits up to five days and cruising permits up to six months. Immigration permission for each person may differ; verify both.

Can my crew fly in one-way and leave on the yacht?

Usually possible with proper documentation, but the captain should provide a signed letter and verify current Immigration requirements before the crew member travels.

Can I bring my dog or cat?

Only with the required import permit and veterinary documents completed before arrival. Bermuda has no quarantine fallback for failed inspections.

Can I spearfish?

Spearfishing requires a Bermuda licence issued only to residents. Spearguns and Hawaiian slings are banned, SCUBA cannot be used, and spearfishing is not allowed within one nautical mile of any island.

Are firearms allowed aboard?

Treat firearms and ammunition as prohibited/restricted unless you have confirmed legal authorization before departure. Do not arrive with undeclared weapons.

What should I keep after clearance?

Keep passports with stamps, clearance papers, permits, Arrival Card confirmations, Customs receipts, fee receipts, pet permits, and any written instructions from authorities.

Crew List

Prepare a printed crew list with vessel name, flag, registration number, captain, crew/passenger names, passport numbers, nationalities, dates of birth, roles, and arrival/departure ports.

Transit / Cruising Permit

Permit application and payment for transit and cruising permits are generally handled during clearance at the Yacht Reporting Centre; local agents may assist in advance, especially for large vessels.

International Clearance / Departure Document

Ask Customs what document will be issued for the next foreign port and verify the destination country will accept it.

Bermuda Arrival Card

Use the official free website: bermudaarrivalcard.com. Keep the confirmation email/download.

Customs Traveller Declaration

Use if you have goods to declare. Government Customs guidance says no Customs Traveller Declaration is required if there are no goods to declare.

Recent Regulatory Changes

The most important recent items for captains are the post-pandemic replacement of travel authorization with the Bermuda Arrival Card, visa-controlled nationality rules, and updated fisheries information. Older permit changes remain operationally important because they define transit, cruising, and charter categories.

Date Change Operational Impact Source
14 November 2022 Travel authorizations no longer required; Bermuda Arrival Card reinstated for visitors arriving by air or yacht. Use the official Arrival Card process and disregard stale references to pandemic travel authorization unless Customs confirms otherwise. Government visitors page
11 August 2023 Bermuda entry visa policy amended for listed visa-controlled nationals requiring UK, US, or Canadian multiple re-entry visas. Crew nationality checks must happen before departure or before crew flies in. Bermuda entry visas
2026 Customs tariff and classification resources updated for 2026. Imported goods and spare parts should be costed against current tariff/duty guidance, not old cruiser reports. Bermuda Customs resources
30 June / 1 July 2026 Government article updated recreational fishing rules, gear restrictions, no-net bays, spearfishing, lobster diving, and penalties. Fishing from the yacht, spearfishing, and lobster diving should be verified before any activity. Recreational Fishing Rules
1 January 2020 Legislation established streamlined permit arrangements for visiting pleasure craft and superyachts, including cruising and charter permit categories. Still operationally important for determining transit, cruising, or charter status. Guidance Document V3
