This Country Brief is an operational decision-support publication, not legal advice. Regulations, fees, office hours, port availability, online systems, and local practices can change with little notice. Captains should verify current requirements with Bahamas Customs, Immigration, the Port Department, BAHFSA, marina management, or a qualified yacht agent before departure and again before arrival.
Summary

Executive Summary

```
The Bahamas is one of the most frequently cruised foreign destinations for North American recreational vessels, but it should not be treated as informal domestic cruising. Foreign pleasure vessels must clear at a designated Port of Entry, obtain the correct cruising permit, satisfy Immigration entry requirements for every person aboard, and comply with fishing, anchoring, firearms, pet, drone, and protected-area rules. The process is usually straightforward when the captain completes Click2Clear preparation before departure and arrives at an active clearance location during normal hours.
Major recent change: The Bahamas announced updated cruising permit and anchorage fee structures effective 1 April 2026. The new structure includes 30-day, 6-month, 12-month, and Frequent Digital Cruising Card options, with separate anchorage and fishing permit fees for many vessels. See the official Ministry of Tourism statement and Bahamas Customs guidance in the References section.
Operational Area Captain’s Interpretation Recommendation Confidence
Entry Process Clear at the nearest designated Port of Entry, fly the Q flag, and keep all crew aboard until clearance except the captain. Submit Click2Clear before leaving the home port, print/save the permit, and arrive during office hours when possible. High
Fees 2026 fee changes materially increased the planning importance of vessel length, permit duration, anchoring, fishing, and passenger count. Calculate costs before departure and verify whether anchorage fees apply to the intended itinerary. High
Immigration Stay A cruising permit does not automatically give crew the same stay period. Immigration determines each visitor’s permitted stay. Check each passport stamp or landing permission and apply for extension before the authorized stay expires. High
Fishing & Spearfishing Fishing permits are now separate from cruising permits and are valid for 30 days. Spearfishing requires written authorization on the permit. Do not fish, spear, take conch, or retain catch until the permit and applicable endorsements are confirmed. High
Pets Dogs and cats require import compliance through BAHFSA, including veterinary certificate timing and vaccination conditions. Start pet import work several weeks before departure and carry both digital and printed copies. High
Local Practice Ports listed as official can differ widely in staffing, weekend service, dockage, and ability to handle after-hours arrivals. Call the marina or local Customs/Immigration office before departing, especially for Family Island arrivals. Medium
Country Overview
For a foreign pleasure vessel, The Bahamas is operationally moderate: the country has a mature yacht-entry system, many Ports of Entry, English-language procedures, and extensive marina infrastructure, but the archipelago’s dispersed geography means local service levels vary substantially between Nassau, Bimini, Grand Bahama, the Abacos, Exuma, Eleuthera, and smaller Family Island ports.
Topic Operational Meaning Captain’s Action
Primary agencies Bahamas Customs controls vessel entry, cruising permits, firearms declarations, fee collection, and outbound clearance where required. Immigration controls each person’s permission to enter and remain. BAHFSA handles animal, plant, and food import permits. The Port Department regulates ports and maritime operations. Do not rely on a marina alone as the authority. Use the marina to coordinate, but verify with the applicable agency.
Clearance model Foreign pleasure vessels must clear Customs and Immigration at a designated Port of Entry. The captain reports while the crew remains aboard until clearance is complete. Fly the yellow Q flag, monitor VHF 16, and contact the destination marina or Customs office before arrival.
Online system Click2Clear is the core Customs system for pleasure craft declarations and cruising permits. Bahamas.com also identifies official vendors for cruising/fishing permits. Complete digital declarations and payment before departure when possible, but still proceed to Customs and Immigration at the Port of Entry.
Typical timeline Major marinas may complete clearance in under two hours when officials are available. Family Island ports, weekends, holidays, or after-hours arrivals can take longer. Plan the crossing so arrival occurs during working hours and with daylight for approach and anchoring.
Seasonality Winter fronts, Gulf Stream conditions, hurricane season, and high marina demand can affect both routing and administrative support. Treat weather windows and office availability as linked operational constraints.
Operational complexity rating: Moderate. The formal requirements are well established, but practical execution depends heavily on the first Port of Entry, the accuracy of Click2Clear submissions, pet/firearm/fishing declarations, and whether the captain arrives during staffed hours.
Ports of Entry / Exit
Bahamas.com publishes an extensive official Ports of Entry list covering the Abacos, Andros, Bimini/Cat Cay, Berry Islands, Cat Island, Eleuthera/Harbour Island, Exumas, Grand Bahama, Inagua, Long Island, New Providence, Paradise Island, and San Salvador. Several entries are “upon request,” private, restricted, or subject to marina arrangements. Treat the list as a starting point, not proof of same-day service.
Before You Leave Home
The highest-payoff preparation is administrative: complete the vessel declaration, verify the chosen Port of Entry, confirm dockage or anchorage plan, prepare documents for every person aboard, and resolve controlled items before entering Bahamian waters.
Preparation Item Required / Recommended Operational Notes
Click2Clear declaration Required / strongly recommended before departure Bahamas Customs states pleasure vessels are entered through the Cruising Permit module. Online submission reduces arrival friction but does not eliminate the need to present to Customs/Immigration at a Port of Entry.
Vessel registration or documentation Required Carry original registration/documentation and digital copies. Ensure vessel name and registration number match Click2Clear.
Passports for all aboard Required Immigration requires valid travel documents. Bahamas tourism and Immigration guidance state passports must generally be valid for at least six months for travelers who are not Bahamian citizens or residents.
Crew list and passenger manifest Required / practical Prepare a printed and digital list with full names, dates of birth, citizenship, passport numbers, roles, and arrival/departure plan.
Immigration landing cards Required by Immigration process Each person may need an arrival/departure card; retain departure portions or equivalent records for departure.
Pet import permit Required if carrying pets BAHFSA transitioned agri-import permits to Click2Clear in September 2024. Start early and ensure veterinary certificate timing matches BAHFSA rules.
Firearms and ammunition inventory Required if aboard Declare make, serial number, type, and exact ammunition count. Firearms must remain locked aboard and cannot be taken ashore without proper authority.
Fishing / spearfishing plan Required if fishing Fishing permits are separate from cruising permits and valid for 30 days. Spear use must be endorsed in writing on the permit.
Drone registration Required if carrying/operating drone CAA-B states drones must be registered; drones over 249 grams require a UAS certificate or certification from country of origin.
Insurance Recommended / marina-required Carry proof of hull, liability, and pollution coverage. Some marinas may require named limits before accepting dockage.
VHF, AIS, EPIRB, radio licenses Recommended / conditionally required Foreign pleasure vessels above 50 feet are required to keep AIS active in Bahamian waters under Bahamas tourism guidance; non-compliance can carry a fine.
Digital backups Recommended Keep PDF copies offline in case cellular or Starlink is unavailable on arrival.
04
Arrival Procedures
The arrival process is predictable when handled in order: approach a designated Port of Entry, fly the Q flag, notify Customs or the marina, keep crew aboard, present documents, complete Immigration, pay fees, receive the cruising permit, and lower the Q flag only after clearance.
Sequence Action Operational Details Common Delay
1 Approach designated Port of Entry Do not anchor at an unapproved location and go ashore before clearance. Use the nearest designated Port of Entry when arriving from abroad. Arriving after officials have left or at a location listed only “upon request.”
2 Fly yellow Q flag Fly the Q flag on arrival and keep crew aboard. Bahamas guidance states only the captain is permitted to leave the vessel until clearance is complete. Crew going ashore early.
3 Notify Customs / marina Call the marina or Customs contact and follow local instructions. Officials may board or ask the captain to report to an office. Unable to reach officials by phone or VHF.
4 Present vessel and crew documents Have original vessel registration, passports, crew list, Click2Clear reference, pet permit, firearms declaration, and fishing request ready. Mismatched vessel registration, missing passport, or incorrect crew count.
5 Customs processing Customs issues the cruising permit and handles declarations, fee payment, and controlled items. Click2Clear payment or portal issues.
6 Immigration processing Each person’s stay is determined by Immigration. Keep the record of permitted stay and departure documents. Crew arriving or departing by air without matching manifest or cruising permit copy.
7 Health / agriculture as applicable Submit maritime health declaration if required; pets, animals, plants, and food items may involve BAHFSA or Customs review. Pet import permit not completed or certificate outside allowed window.
8 Receive permit and lower Q flag Keep the cruising permit aboard and available. Do not begin fishing until the permit is issued and fishing permit/endorsement is confirmed. Assuming a paid online submission alone equals final clearance.
Captain’s caution: The online declaration is not a substitute for physical or official clearance at the Port of Entry. Bahamas.com explicitly notes that boaters who pre-register online still proceed to Customs and Immigration at the Port of Entry.
05
Immigration
Immigration controls people, not the vessel. The captain should treat every crew member’s permission to remain as a separate compliance item from the cruising permit.
Issue Official / Operational Position Captain’s Action
Maximum stay Bahamas Immigration states visitors may remain for a maximum period of up to eight months if they can support themselves, but the actual period entered in the passport is at the discretion of the immigration officer. Check the specific authorized stay for each person immediately after clearance.
Passport validity Passports are required for all persons entering The Bahamas; tourism guidance states non-residents generally need six months’ validity at entry. Do not depart with marginal passport validity, especially for non-U.S./Canadian crew.
Visa requirements Visa exemptions vary by nationality. U.S., Canadian, U.K., and many Commonwealth and regional citizens may be visa-exempt subject to conditions. Verify nationality-specific visa needs before adding crew.
Crew flying in Bahamas.com states crew arriving by air and returning by private boat may need the vessel owner/operator to present himself/herself and the cruising permit; a letter alone will not suffice. Provide arriving crew with a copy of the cruising permit and coordinate airport arrival details.
Extension of stay Bahamas Immigration implemented a non-refundable $200 processing fee for extension-of-stay applications effective 18 September 2024. Required items include proof of payment, return ticket or temporary cruising permit, passport, local address, landing card, reason for extension, and contact details. Apply before expiration. Do not assume a long cruising permit extends crew immigration stay.
Work Visitors are not allowed to engage in gainful occupation while in The Bahamas. Private recreational cruising is different from charter, paid work, coaching, repairs-for-pay, or commercial activity.
Re-entry Re-entry privileges depend on permit type. 6-month permits include one free re-entry and 12-month permits include two free re-entries under 2026 fee guidance. Track both vessel re-entry rights and each crew member’s immigration status.
06
Customs & Temporary Importation
Customs treats a foreign pleasure vessel arriving under its own power as a temporary visiting vessel eligible for a cruising permit when the importer is not a Bahamian resident, is not employed in The Bahamas for more than six months, and the vessel is not used for commercial purposes or hire.
Temporary Cruising Permit
The core document for a foreign pleasure vessel cruising The Bahamas is the Temporary Cruising Permit, issued after the inward declaration and clearance process. Permit duration and re-entry rights vary by fee category.
Operationally, the permit should remain aboard and be available for inspection, marina check-in, fishing permit linkage, and outbound clearance if requested.
Vessels Not Arriving Under Own Power
Bahamas Customs provides a separate temporary import process for pleasure vessels arriving not under their own power, usually involving Form C41, a bond, and Form C42. The permit is described as valid for up to 12 months with a separate C42 issuance cost.
Operationally, use a Customs broker or agent for shipped-in, towed, damaged, or transport-delivered yachts.
Repairs, Spares, and Imported Equipment
Spares and repair equipment imported separately from the vessel can trigger Customs entries, duties, VAT, broker handling, or temporary import procedures.
Operationally, do not ship major parts into The Bahamas without confirming Customs handling, invoice requirements, and who will act as importer of record.
Dinghies and Tenders
Customs notes that pleasure craft categories do not include ancillary equipment towed or aboard, except tenders over 25 feet long.
Operationally, list tenders clearly if asked, especially large chase boats or tenders near the threshold.
Unresolved operational issue: The 2026 fee structure and anchorage fee implementation are new enough that marina interpretation, Click2Clear user-interface behavior, and cruiser expectations may not always align. Captains should verify whether their itinerary triggers anchorage fees, marina exemptions, or re-entry charges before paying and before departing the first port.
Customs Topic Operational Meaning Recommended Handling Confidence
Personal stores Normal vessel stores are expected, but prohibited/restricted goods and commercial quantities create risk. Declare unusual quantities, controlled items, food/agricultural items, and anything intended for sale or delivery. Medium
Cash reporting Customs FAQ states persons carrying cash and negotiable instruments equivalent to $10,000 or more must declare. Declare currency and monetary instruments at or above the threshold on arrival or departure. High
Firearms Declared firearms and exact ammunition counts are controlled by Customs and may be checked on departure. Avoid carrying firearms if practical. If aboard, declare accurately and keep locked aboard. High
Charter activity Vessels used for commercial purposes or hire are not treated as private pleasure vessels and require charter licensing/VAT handling. Use a yacht agent before any charter, paid guest trip, filming, or commercial operation. High
07
Cruising Within the Country
Once cleared, private vessels may cruise Bahamian waters within the scope of their permit, but domestic movement still requires attention to anchorage fees, fishing permits, protected areas, environmental rules, and local marina or harbour requirements.
Area Operational Guidance Captain’s Risk Control
Domestic movement After Customs/Immigration clearance, the vessel may move between islands within permit limits. Local reporting is not normally treated like port-to-port international clearance, but marinas may ask for the cruising permit. Keep permit, passports, and declarations aboard and accessible.
National zarpe / domestic clearance The Bahamas does not generally require a domestic zarpe for private cruising between islands, but charter, commercial, or unusual movements may differ. Verify with Customs or Port Department if carrying paying guests, cargo, or changing vessel status.
Anchoring 2026 rules introduced or clarified anchorage fees for foreign pleasure vessels not mooring at a marina. Protected areas may have additional park anchorage or mooring fees. Track where anchorage fees are paid and retain receipts.
Protected areas Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park and other Bahamas National Trust areas can prohibit fishing, conching, shelling, lobstering, or removing living/dead material. Assume “no take” unless a park-specific rule clearly allows it.
Fishing Foreign-owned vessels require a sport fishing permit. Fishing permits are separate and valid for 30 days under current Customs guidance. Renew monthly and check species, gear, and area restrictions.
Spearfishing Bahamas fishing guidance allows spear use only when specifically authorized and endorsed on the permit, limited to hand-held sling or pole spear when granted. Do not carry or use prohibited underwater guns. Confirm written endorsement.
Waste Waste disposal infrastructure is variable. Environmental sensitivity is high in shallow banks, parks, and tourist areas. Retain garbage aboard until marina disposal; avoid discharge in anchorages and parks.
Fuel Fuel is available at major hubs but not uniformly reliable in smaller settlements. Refuel opportunistically; verify hours and delivery before committing to remote legs.
Protected-area mindset: In the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, Bahamas National Trust guidance describes the park as a no-take zone. Nothing living or dead should be removed, and suspicious activity may be reported to park wardens on VHF 09.
08
Fees & Costs
Bahamas entry costs are now a material voyage-planning item. Vessel length, permit duration, re-entry needs, anchoring, fishing, additional passengers, after-hours service, pets, drones, and outbound certificate needs can all affect the total cost.
09
Controlled & Restricted Items
The safest operating rule is simple: declare anything controlled, unusual, valuable, agricultural, animal-related, weapons-related, drone-related, or commercial. Undeclared controlled items can convert an otherwise routine clearance into seizure, fines, detention, or criminal exposure.
Prescription medications Generally allowed for personal use Carry original containers and prescription Controlled medications can be treated as drugs if unsupported Carry doctor’s letter for controlled prescriptions and avoid excess quantities Medium
Controlled medications Restricted Declare if asked; carry documentation Seizure or criminal exposure if treated as controlled drugs Do not carry undocumented opioids, stimulants, sedatives, or similar controlled substances Medium
Medical marijuana Do not import unless specific legal authority is confirmed Permit/licence would be required under applicable drug/cannabis law Serious drug-law exposure Do not bring marijuana into The Bahamas aboard a yacht Medium
CBD products Treat as restricted/prohibited unless specifically cleared Verify with Customs before departure May be treated as cannabis/drug product Leave CBD products behind unless written authority exists Medium
Narcotics / illegal drugs Prohibited Not applicable Arrest, prosecution, vessel search, seizure Zero tolerance aboard High
Firearms Limited allowance for pleasure vessels Mandatory declaration with make, serial number, and ammunition count Forfeiture, fines, imprisonment; firearms may be detained if vessel is deemed unfit Avoid carrying firearms if possible; if aboard, declare accurately and keep locked aboard High
Ammunition Limited Mandatory declaration and exact count Same as firearms Do not exceed Customs limits; count before departure High
Pepper spray / mace Unclear / restricted Verify with Customs Weapon classification risk Do not carry unless written confirmation obtained Low
Signal flares Normal vessel safety equipment Declare if requested; keep aboard Could be confused with pyrotechnic restrictions if mishandled Carry only SOLAS/approved marine distress signals and do not take ashore Medium
Alcohol Allowed in personal quantities; duty-free allowance applies to accompanied baggage Declare stores if asked Duty or seizure for commercial quantities Keep quantities reasonable; declare large stocks Medium
Tobacco Allowed in personal quantities Declare if above allowance Duty or seizure for excess quantities Declare cartons or bulk tobacco Medium
Cash Allowed Declare cash / negotiable instruments equivalent to $10,000 or more Seizure and enforcement action for non-declaration Use written declaration and keep copies High
Food / meat / produce Some allowed; unfit food prohibited; agricultural items can be restricted Declare food, plants, and animal products when asked Seizure, disposal, delay Minimize fresh produce and meats before arrival; retain packaging and receipts Medium
Plants / seeds / soil Restricted BAHFSA permit may be required Seizure, quarantine, fines Do not carry live plants or soil unless import permit is complete High
Pets Allowed if import requirements met BAHFSA import permit and veterinary certificate Refusal, quarantine, delay Start permit process weeks ahead; see Pets section High
Fishing gear Allowed Fishing permit required before use from foreign vessel Fines, gear/catch seizure Secure gear until permit is issued High
Spearfishing gear Limited Written authorization on fishing permit for hand sling / pole spear Violation risk; underwater guns restricted/prohibited Use only gear authorized on permit; avoid spearguns High
Drones Allowed only with registration/authorization CAA-B registration; drones over 249g require UAS certificate or equivalent Customs delay, confiscation, flight violation Register before arrival and carry certificate High
Starlink / satellite internet Generally used by yachts, but service-plan and regulatory status should be verified Verify current Starlink plan and Bahamian regulatory status Connectivity limitation, customs questions, or plan restriction Carry account proof; do not rely on it as sole arrival communications Medium
HF radio / satellite phone Generally normal vessel communications equipment Radio licences recommended Inspection or licensing questions Carry vessel station license and operator license where applicable Medium
AIS Required active for foreign pleasure vessels above 50 ft under Bahamas tourism guidance Keep AIS active Reported $1,000 fine for non-compliance Verify MMSI data and transmit continuously in Bahamian waters High
EPIRBs / PLBs Normal safety equipment Carry registration False activation response Update registration and emergency contacts before crossing High
Commercial equipment / cargo Restricted by purpose Customs entry may be required Loss of pleasure-vessel treatment, duties, seizure Do not carry goods for delivery, sale, or paid work without Customs guidance High
Pets
Pets are manageable but paperwork-sensitive. BAHFSA publishes import conditions for cats and dogs and transitioned agricultural import permitting to Click2Clear in September 2024. The captain should treat pet clearance as a separate workstream from vessel clearance.
Pet Requirement Operational Meaning Captain’s Action
Import permit Dogs and cats require import permission through BAHFSA processes. Register and apply through the current Click2Clear / BAHFSA ePermitting route before departure.
Veterinary certificate BAHFSA conditions require an international veterinary certificate within 10 days of importation for cats and dogs. Schedule the vet visit to match the actual planned arrival window, not the intended departure date if weather may delay the crossing.
Age BAHFSA conditions state cats and dogs must be more than six months of age. Do not plan to enter with young puppies or kittens without direct BAHFSA confirmation.
Vaccinations Dogs and cats require rabies and species-specific vaccinations. For non-rabies-free countries, BAHFSA specifies timing windows for one-year and three-year rabies vaccines. Have the veterinarian list vaccine manufacturer, lot, date, and duration clearly.
Parasites BAHFSA conditions require freedom from internal and external parasites, including negative fecal testing language. Carry fecal test results and parasite treatment records.
Returning home U.S., Canadian, or other return rules may differ from Bahamas entry rules. Check the destination country’s pet re-entry rules before leaving home, especially for dogs returning to the United States.
Known Yacht Agents & Clearance Services
Most private owner/operators can clear without an agent when the situation is simple. Agents become more valuable for large yachts, charter activity, VAT, crew movement, pets, firearms, repairs, imported parts, special events, film work, or late/complex arrivals.
Departure Procedures
Departure is often simpler than arrival, but not optional to think through. Bahamas Customs states pleasure vessels are only required to clear outward if they require clearance documents for the next foreign port. However, Immigration departure records, firearms verification, seafood verification, and the requirements of the next country can make outbound handling operationally important.
Sequence Action Operational Notes
1 Determine if next destination requires clearance papers If the next country or port expects an international zarpe / clearance certificate, arrange outbound clearance with Bahamas Customs.
2 Create outbound in Click2Clear if needed Customs guidance describes creating an outbound voyage in the Pleasure Craft module using the prior rotation/vessel registration information.
3 Present temporary cruising permit Customs requires the temporary cruising permit at outbound application when clearance documents are requested.
4 Verify declared firearms and seafood Customs states the vessel may be checked to ensure declared firearms, ammunition, accessories, and seafood are aboard and compliant.
5 Surrender Immigration card / handle departure records Bahamas guidance says to surrender the copy of the Immigration Card at the last Bahamian port visited before leaving.
6 Receive Certificate of Clearance if requested Customs states outbound clearance certificate cost is $75.
7 Depart promptly Do not continue cruising after declaring outward unless Customs/Immigration has authorized the timing.
Reality Check
Reality Why It Surprises Captains Operational Response
Boat permit and crew stay are different A 6- or 12-month cruising permit can create false confidence about people aboard. Track Immigration permission separately for each person.
Official Ports of Entry are not equal Some are major hubs; others are upon request, private, restricted, or facility-dependent. Call before crossing, especially outside Bimini, Nassau, Freeport, Marsh Harbour, or Great Exuma.
Click2Clear can be confusing The platform is not designed like a recreational boating app. Start the declaration early and avoid doing first-time setup in a rough anchorage.
New fees changed cruising economics Many captains remember older cruising permit structures when fishing was bundled or anchoring was less prominent. Use current 2026 schedules before budgeting.
Fishing is tightly regulated The Bahamas is a fishing destination, but foreign vessels are not free to fish immediately on arrival. Wait for permit, know limits, and treat parks as no-take unless clearly otherwise.
Weekend arrivals can cost more Some marinas can arrange service but officials may charge overtime. Arrive weekday business hours when practical.
Agents are not only for superyachts Owner/operators often avoid agents, but a small error with pets/firearms/crew can cost more than help. Use an agent for complexity, not status.
14
Common Cruiser Mistakes
Mistake Why It Happens Consequences How to Avoid It
Going ashore before clearance The destination feels familiar and informal. Customs/Immigration violation and difficult first impression. Keep everyone aboard except the captain until cleared.
Assuming online payment equals clearance Digital systems make the process feel complete. Vessel may still be uncleared. Proceed to Customs/Immigration at the Port of Entry.
Using an “upon request” port without confirmation The location appears on an official list. Delay, inability to clear, or forced relocation. Get direct confirmation before departure.
Fishing before permit issuance Fishing gear is aboard and water looks remote. Fine, gear seizure, catch seizure, permit problems. Do not fish until the permit is issued and rules are known.
Carrying undeclared firearms or ammunition Fear of theft or misunderstanding of U.S. norms. Forfeiture, fines, imprisonment. Avoid firearms if possible; otherwise declare precisely.
Pet certificate outside required timing Weather delays the crossing after a vet visit. Pet entry delay or denial. Build weather flexibility into the pet paperwork schedule.
Confusing national anchorage fees and park fees Both relate to anchoring but are different systems. Unexpected charges or noncompliance. Track Customs anchorage fees separately from BNT or park mooring/anchorage fees.
Letting crew fly in without documentation Air travel feels separate from boat clearance. Immigration issues at airport. Provide the crew member with the cruising permit copy and matching manifest information.
Captain’s Notes
Arrive Boring
A good Bahamas arrival is boring: daylight, known dock or anchorage, working phones, completed Click2Clear, printed documents, Q flag up, no crew wandering ashore, no fishing gear in use, and a polite captain ready with originals.
Choose the First Port for Administration, Not Scenery
The prettiest first anchorage is not always the best first administrative stop. Use Bimini, West End, Freeport, Nassau, Marsh Harbour, or Great Exuma when certainty matters.
Keep the Vessel “Pleasure”
Carrying cargo, taking paying passengers, doing charter work, or performing paid services can change the vessel’s status. When the trip is private, keep it private.
Plan for Office Hours Like Weather
A marginal office-hours plan is operationally similar to a marginal weather window. Both can leave the vessel in the wrong place with limited options.
Remote Does Not Mean Unregulated
The remoteness of an anchorage does not relax fishing, park, drone, firearms, or customs rules. Assume inspection is possible anywhere.
Save Every Receipt
Keep permit receipts, anchorage payments, park payments, fishing permits, extension receipts, and agent invoices. The next official may ask for proof already provided elsewhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I complete everything online before arrival?
No. Online pre-registration and payment are strongly recommended, but captains still proceed to Customs and Immigration at the Port of Entry.
Is the fishing permit included in the cruising permit?
No. Current Bahamas Customs guidance states fishing permits are no longer included and are valid for 30 days.
Do I need to clear out of The Bahamas?
Only if clearance documents are required for the next foreign destination, according to Bahamas Customs. If required, the process costs $75 under current guidance.
Can I bring a firearm?
Limited firearms may be allowed on pleasure vessels only when declared correctly, kept locked aboard, and not taken ashore. The risk of mistakes is high; avoid carrying firearms unless necessary.
Can crew fly in and leave by boat?
Yes, but Bahamas.com states the vessel owner/operator may need to present himself/herself and the cruising permit; a letter alone will not suffice.
Can I anchor anywhere?
No. Navigation, local restrictions, private areas, protected areas, holding, depth, and new anchorage fee rules all matter. In parks, additional rules and fees may apply.
How long can crew stay?
Immigration determines each person’s authorized stay. Bahamas Immigration states visitors may remain up to a maximum of eight months if eligible, but the actual stay is at officer discretion.
Do drones need permission?
Yes. CAA-B says all drones must be registered and drones over 249 grams require a UAS certificate or certification from the country of origin.
